Solstice Celebration
Back, long ago, it was a good omen that every December 21 the sun would return and the days would grow longer. People thought that spring would come back and that life would come out of hibernation. Even before the Middle Ages, people of all cultures have celebrated Solstice as a holiday. During this time, people would give gifts, feast together, and brighten up their celebration with lights. Even today, many religious traditions have indirectly brought this into their own celebrations. Yet, Solstice has in a way been forgotten. People must know about this holiday! It’s one of the most important holidays of the year!
The Bellwether School, located in Williston, Vermont, STILL TAKES ON THE TRADITION. Every year, The Bellwether School has a Solstice Celebration in which the whole Bellwether Community, including students, teachers, parents and friends participates in. This year, it took place on Monday, December 15, 2008. They celebrate Solstice at the Bellwether School by singing songs and selling crafts that the students made themselves. Some examples of the crafts they sell are clay necklaces, bells, cookies, calendars, and recycled bowls.
The Bellwether School does this to raise money to give back to the community. It is a glorious time to celebrate this time of year. This is the time that the school helps to remind us that the greatest gift we can give is to share our time with our family and friends.
In the end, The Bellwether School was able to raise $745.00! The money was divided between three important organizations: the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, the North Country Animal League, and the Sara Holbrook Community Center. The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf provides food for the needy. The North Country Animal League helps to rescue cats and dogs that either cannot be taken care of, or happen to be strays. The Sara Holbrook Community Center assists low income children and their families. Through this Solstice Celebration, the Bellwether School exemplified what this Holiday really represents: giving and joy.
